Chapter Fourteen

Excitement lit Rebecca’s eyes momentarily, then just as quickly, shock overwhelmed her, followed by fear.

Cookie hit her with an enchantment that wrapped around her legs and arms and slowly squeezed. Grant’s spell brought hail pelting out of the sky in the exact spot where she was standing.

Rebecca tried to duck out of the way, to no avail. The hail followed her wherever she went. A strange green mist kept her from moving effectively.

She started to scream.

After the first shock wore off, the lopsided battle became almost boring. Cookie and Grant seemed to think so as well, because I saw them make eye contact, then start walking toward Rebecca as they eased their spells back away from her.

Lark spun around to look at me. “Come on. Let’s go explore the ship while everyone’s busy.”

“Great idea!” I agreed.

This was the perfect moment for us to make a getaway. With everyone else distracted we could search without interruption.

Jason half turned to her, surprise lighting his eyes.

“We’ll be back,” Lark said to Jason.

Jason looked a bit dazed. “You can’t run off without any of us.”

“Sure we can,” I told him.

“I’m going with you,” he said.

Lark clearly wanted to argue, but that would waste precious moments.

“Fine,” was all she said as she rushed off.

I followed her, and from the sound of a heavy footstep behind me, I knew Jason that was behind me.

I felt a thrill and a tingle rush through me as we headed back down into the bowels of the ship.

“Where first?” Lark asked.

“The tea room makes the most sense. We didn’t have a lot of time before,” I said. “There must be a clue there for us.”

Jason kept silent as we ran in that direction. I suspected that it was because he knew quite well that Lark would make him leave if he said anything she didn’t like.

He was smart, this Jason. I could see why Grant kept him around.

The tea room’s doors were open, but there was no light inside. The whole space felt spooky.

Shadows drifted as the ship moved through the water and the angle of the moonlight streaming in through the portholes kept shifting. Now that the bad weather had stopped, the sky was a clear and brilliant black.

Jason found the light switches and gave us some illumination to work by. The air felt staler down here all of a sudden.

“Her teas,” Lark said, making her way over to the racks of teas.

I went back to the place where Ms. Buttercake had always sat to check out various papers, some of which were still sitting on the table in front of her chair. Captain Rebecca had certainly gone through them, as had Grant, but I wanted to take another look anyway.

Holding his stomach, Jason grimaced. “I might have forgotten to take my seasickness medicine on time.”

“Lovely,” I said.

“I’ll go back and take it after we’re done here,” he said, walking over to the brewing station. The array of expensive and antique pieces of equipment Ms. Buttercake had amassed made my head spin.
